To complete a full solar year, there were 12 extra days at the end, the “time outside of time.” These days fall during the darkest period of the year. Traditionally, nothing was done during this time. It was a moment to pause, reflect, and prepare silently for the new year. It was also a period of cleansing. Due to the darkness, it was believed to be especially important to protect and purify oneself, often through the use of smoke.
