Kitsune

Kitsune

Guides • Messengers • Tricksters
Kitsune is the Japanese word for “fox.” The kitsune is a magical fox-like being with shifting powers that change depending on its age. They are true shapeshifters, often taking the form of a beautiful young woman. In their fox form, they can have anywhere from 1 to 9 tails, depending on their age. The older and wiser they become, the more tails they grow. Younger kitsune are usually orange and white, while the older ones are completely white. They are highly intelligent and deeply spiritual.

In general, kitsune are divided into two groups: Yako and Zenko. The Yako are deceptive and malevolent, known for their trickery and for possessing humans — a phenomenon called kitsunetsuki, literally “possessed by a fox.” The Zenko, on the other hand, are benevolent and spiritual. They act as messengers between the earthly and the spiritual realms, guiding and helping people on their life paths. In Japan, statues of Zenko kitsune can often be found at shrines, usually holding a scroll — a symbolic message — in their mouths.

As a spirit guide, a kitsune may appear to remind you to be attentive to the messages and signs crossing your path. It can also signal that you may have something important to share — a truth or story that needs to be spoken. When connecting with a kitsune, ensure that you are aligning with a Zenko and not a Yako.
